A New Beginning- Devlog 14
This week has been something for our board game creation. Let me tell you, it has been a difficult couple of weeks, but I see we are on track to having a great game. So honestly, I am not too worried. Anyway back to this week's devlog we are going to be talking about how Flanagan discusses the cultural role of board games in history. Also, we are going to discuss The Landlord Game and what its significance is in history as well as why don't most people know it today. Anyway, let's get right into it.
In Flanagan's chapter discussing board games in history, it dates back to the older times when board games we are things as well. Nowadays, we are uncovering burial with board games with pieces that have characters such as that of go and chess. This shows that board games have been around for as long as we could remember. Since this is that, well that shows that many of these games are a thing of the past that have evolved into the new age of today's society. This shows, that board games are a very important cultural thing to humans, that dates very far back into the past! In the book, she states, "The oldest games are found at sites of the world’s ancient civilizations,..." This specifically states that board games have dated back years and years and years. Furthermore, there are hundreds of thousands of other games that are dated back to ancient civilizations such as "mancala" as was stated in the book, and, "Senet" as stated again in the book as well. That gives us a total of three quotes from the book in a state about the board games Flanagan talks about, and that isn't the end of it. Being that that were three main games, she expresses many other games as well, that date far far far back in ancient civilization times.
On page 85 Flanagan starts mentioning about "The Landlords Game," in which she states, "The Landlord’s Game was the first game to be granted a U.S. patent, in 1904..." This is where the talk about the game comes into the conversation. The problem was that the game was very confusing and they couldn't understand it, so it never so the light of day. On the other hand, Charles Brace Darrow used this idea to make a game of their own that resembled a monopoly. This in turn is the reason we haven't heard of "The Landlords Game" in the United States . But since it helped to generate the idea of the so-called "Monopoly" it was a very important game in that sense. So all in all "The Landlords Game" was an important game in history and a step into the future for another amazing game.
